What is Melasma?
Melasma is a benign condition whereby the skin becomes blotchy and mottled with darker areas of pigmentation. It can result in embarrassing deformities.
Treatment Options
There are many treatment options available for melasma, but it’s important that people who suffer from melasma understand that treatment does not get rid of it; it just controls the melasma.
- Hydroquinones - which are topical creams applied to the skin that inhibit the formation of melanin, which is responsible for the increase in pigmentation of the skin.
Azelaic acid- a cream that is usually used as a topical acne treatment. It has been shown that azelaic acid reduces melasma, as well as any discoloration associated with acne lesions. another newer product has recently been approved for cosmetic use in reducing melasma and discoloration it is called LUMIXYL. Lumixyl is a NON-Hydroquinone product that has been shown to reduce and improve discoloration and melasma as well as hydroquinone based products without any of the concerns. Lumixyl is available at our office for purchase. - Topical Retinoids- significantly reduce melasma
- Chemical Peels- a superficial or medium depth peel, such as a beta hydroxyl peel, or a Jessners peel, both of which help to reduce the discoloration with minimal redness, irritation and downtime
- Microdermabrasion- helps to reduce the superficial discoloration within the upper epidermis of the skin
- Lasers- preferred methods of treatment in melasma include the Q switch ruby laser, the Q switch Nd:Yag laser, the alexandrite, the CO2 and Er:Yag lasers
It is probably best if more than one method of control is used, this will allow greater control over your discoloration. Combining topical agents as well as in office procedures can give the best results.
Keep in mind, SPF is probably the most important thing you can do to avoid increase in discoloration while protecting your skin. Broad spectrum sunscreens and sun blocks are essential in controlling and maintaining your skin’s color alone, or in combination of any of the other treatment options motioned.
